Veterans Triumph in 22nd Gurkha Cup 2024: A Historic Victory!
The Brigade Boys Club (BBC) Veterans have made history once again by winning the 22nd Gurkha Cup 2024, triumphing over Dharan 11 FC in an exciting final. The BBC Veterans secured a cash prize of £1,500, while Dharan 11 FC received £1,000, along with certificates and trophies.
The Gurkha Cup, facilitated by the Tamu Dhee Association UK, is more than just a football tournament. It’s the largest Nepali cultural celebration in the UK, akin to a late 19th to early 20th-century English County Fayre. The event features exceptional cultural performances, the world-renowned Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas, and a vibrant community spirit that extends beyond the football pitch.
A record-breaking crowd of over 14,000 spectators gathered to witness this year’s tournament, creating an electric atmosphere that underscored the event’s growing popularity and significance.
Major (retired) Krishna Gurung, the lead founder of the Gurkha Cup, shared that the event was created to steer Nepali youth in the UK away from negative influences such as excessive drinking and drugs, and towards becoming better citizens and community members. Since its establishment in 2000, with the inaugural cup presented by the King of Greece, the Gurkha Cup has grown in popularity, becoming a prestigious event within the Nepali community in the UK and beyond.
This year’s event saw fierce competition in the Veteran category, with 16 teams vying for the title. The Brigade Boys Club continued their winning streak, showcasing their talent and sportsmanship.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors for their continued support: Gold sponsor Sungabha Entertainment, Silver sponsor Chillim Reading, and Vet team sponsor A Star Financial Solutions UK.
The Gurkha Cup remains a beacon of unity and cultural pride, bringing together the Nepali community in a celebration of sport, heritage, and camaraderie. Congratulations to the Brigade Boys Club Veterans on their remarkable victory for the third time!
